If your boat is ever damaged the insurance company usually assigns a surveyor to assess the damage and estimate the cost of  repairs.  That surveyor is representing and being paid for the by insurance company.  Many boat owners hire their own surveyor to represent their interests and inspect the damage with the insurance company surveyor.  In my experience this procedure has produced the most amicable results.
